No prior lorry-driving experience is needed. As long as you hold a valid car licence (Category B) and pass a simple medical, you can begin your HGV training in Sparkford straight away.

YDT offer LGV license acquisition training courses in all categories of LGV/HGV. We also offer trailer towing courses to the standard of the now obsolete DVSA B+E test. Intensive training is encouraged as it assures best preparation for a first time test success.

YDT has its origins in Yeovil, our main training hub is next to the A303 at Sparkford nr Yeovil. Due to increased demand across the region we now have satellite training hubs in Taunton, Cullompton nr Exeter and Bristol to service Devon, North Somerset and South Wales.

The training course is very much geared to the type of lorry you wish to drive and your previous driving experience. The course will be tailored to meet your individual training needs. We encourage an initial one hour assessment to be sure the intensive course is exactly right for you. The training usually takes from 3 to 5 days which includes your driving tests.

Candidates need to be at least 18 years old, hold a full UK car driving licence, pass a medical examination, obtain a provisional LGV licence. We can help you through the process.

The cost of HGV/LGV training can vary depending on factors such as previous driving experience, type of licence being pursued and any additional services included in the training package. On average, however, training cost can range from around £750 for a C1 to around £2500 for a car direct to Artic course.

These forms can be obtained from DVLA or we can provide them by completing the box on our home page.

Access the forms here:
https://forms.dft.gov.uk/order-dvla-forms

The D2 form is the application form that you complete to get a provisional licence entitlement to drive the vehicle of your choice as a learner. The D4 is a medical application form which must accompany the D2 form. Both of these must be sent to the DVLA when completed. There is no charge for applying for these forms.

The D4 medical form will be completed by the doctor examining you. They will complete the form stating whether or not you are fit and well enough to drive a HGV/LGV or PCV vehicle. The medical lasts until you are 45 years of age and then after 45 years of age another medical is required every 5 years until the age of 65 at which point medicals will be required annually.

When attending the medical the following will be examined or checked:-

Medical History

Alcohol or Drug abuse

Sleep disorders

Blood pressure

Eyesight test

Heart/Cardiac problems or family history

Neurological disorders

Psychiatric disorders

Urine maybe tested for diabetes

The medical will last approximately 30 minutes, the doctor will ask you many questions on your lifestyle and health. It is paramount that the truth is told or it could have a bearing later if it could be proven that you lied to get your licence.

The best way is to go online and search ‘hgv medicals’ or ‘pcv medicals’. The cost is approx £50-£60, going to your own GP will cost significantly more for the same examination and will probably take a lot longer to get an appointment.

Once both your D2 and D4 forms are complete, send in the envelope provided using a large letter stamp.

If you already hold a Cat C (rigid) provisional entitlement and have decided you want or need to drive a C+E all you need is obtain and complete another D2 form, enclose your driving licence and DVLA they will update your licence with the C+E provisional category. Because you have already done your medical to obtain your cat C provisional there is no need for another medical.
