Licence acquisition process

There a four tests (or modules) you will have to pass to gain a vocational driving licence and drive professionally. We will briefly explain this process below.

For all categories of HGV/LGV licence acquisition you will be at least 18 years old and you will need to apply for your provisional licence entitlement using a D2 form, all categories C+E, Cat C or C1 licence you will need to have a medical assessment ( FAQ’S will explain what the medical involves), complete a hazard perception and theory test and then finally complete your driving tests which consist of a 3A reversing tests and 3B on road driving test. If you wish to use your driving licence for hire and reward you will also need to take a Module 2 case study test and Driver CPC Module 4 test.

The medical assessment can be booked online at a place and time convenient to yourself. You will need to take the D4 medical form to the medical assessment. Approx cost of the medical is £50-£60 if booked with a HGV Medical provider, costs will be significantly more if book with own GP. The D4 form can be obtained from the DVLA online or at some Post Offices or you can click on the button on our main page and we will send both or either first class to you. Always tick both C & D categories as this will save you time and money in the future if you should ever change your mind.

The hazard perception and theory test can be booked online via the DVSA website. There are study materials or apps available to purchase to enable you to study and learn the require knowledge. We can advise you on tried and tested study materials if needed.

The 3A reversing exercise and 3B driving test will be taken while on your training course with us. The cost of these will be included in the course fees and will be booked by us.

The module 2 case study test will need to be booked by yourself online on the DVSA website. The Module 2 needs to be taken and passed before you can complete the final module 4 if using your licence for hire and reward.

The driver CPC module 4 test is a basic practical demonstration assessment relating to vehicle safety. The training and test can be taken with us while you are on your training course with us or after you have already passed your C+E driving test. If you need a CPC and have not trained with us before we can still provide this test for you. Passing the Driver CPC module 4 will provide you with your driver qualification card. You will need to apply for a digital tacho card on gov.uk website.
