Licence acquisition process

YDT HGV Training

1. Overview of the Process

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Apply for your provisional licence entitlement using a D2 form.
  • Complete a medical assessment (D4 form required).
  • Pass the theory and hazard perception tests.
  • Pass the practical driving tests (3A reversing test and 3B on-road driving test).
  • If using your licence for hire and reward, you must also pass Module 2 (case study) and Driver CPC Module 4.

2. Medical Assessment (D4 Form)

For categories C+E, Cat C or C1, you must complete a medical assessment.

  • Book your medical online at a time and place convenient to you.
  • Take your D4 medical form to the appointment.
  • Typical cost is £50–£60 with an HGV medical provider.
  • Costs are usually significantly higher if booked with your own GP.
  • D4 forms can be obtained online, from some Post Offices, or requested from us by first-class post.
  • Be sure to tick the box for additional entitlement and tick for all lorry and bus.

3. Theory & Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception and theory test must be booked online via the DVSA website.

  • Study materials and mobile apps are available to help you prepare.
  • We can recommend tried and tested study materials if required.

4. Practical Driving Tests (Module 3A & 3B)

The practical driving assessment consists of two parts:

  • 3A – Reversing test (C1+E and C+E includes trailer un-couple/re-couple).
  • 3B – On-road driving test.
  • These tests are completed during your training course with us.
  • The cost of the tests is included in the course fees and will be booked by us.

5. Module 2 – Case Study Test (Hire & Reward)

If you intend to use your licence for hire and reward, you must complete Module 2.

  • This test must be booked online via the DVSA website.
  • Module 2 must be passed before completing Module 4.

6. Driver CPC Module 4 – Practical Demonstration

Module 4 is a practical vehicle safety demonstration assessment.

  • Training and testing can be completed with us during or after your training course.
  • If you have already passed your C+E test elsewhere, we can still provide Module 4 training and testing.
  • Passing Module 4 provides you with your Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
  • You will also need to apply for a digital tachograph card via the GOV.UK website.
