Frequently Asked Questions.

What is a Category D licence for?

A Category D licence allows you to drive large passenger vehicles, such as buses or coaches, with more than 16 passenger seats. It is required for anyone who wants to operate these vehicles professionally, including service buses, school coaches, or long-distance coaches. To drive commercially, you’ll also need the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). Click here to learn more about our CPC training.

A Category D1 licence allows you to drive minibuses with 9–16 passenger seats. This is ideal for school trips, sports teams, community transport, or small shuttle services. Like Category D, professional driving also requires the CPC qualification. Click here to learn more about our CPC training.

PCV stands for Passenger Carrying Vehicle. It is the type of licence required to drive buses or minibuses for work. Both Category D (buses/coaches) and D1 (minibuses) fall under PCV licensing.

The CPC is a mandatory qualification for professional PCV drivers. It ensures drivers have the knowledge and skills to operate passenger vehicles safely. New drivers complete the Initial CPC, including Module 2 (case studies) and Module 4 (practical assessment). Click here to learn more about our CPC training.

For a minibus with 9–16 seats, you need a D1 licence. If the minibus has more than 16 seats, you will need a D licence. Even for voluntary or occasional work, professional driving often requires the CPC qualification.
